According to the company, the way they do business, the way they make products, the way they source ingredients, and the way they use their voice are different because of the five-core Values:
* Against Animal Testing—The Body Shop believes that testing cosmetic products on animals is unethical, unnecessary and should be banned.
* Support Community Trade. They believe that buying the highest quality natural ingredients and handcrafted products from the best people for a fair price is a better way to make business.
* Activate Self Esteem—the company is dedicated to never selling false promises, or an unattainable ideal of beauty, and never ever playing on insecurities. Roddick’s company believes that there isn’t a single way for a human to look.
* Defend Human Rights— The Body Shop believes that they have a responsibility to ensure that wherever they trade and whomever they trade with, their relationships respect and honor human rights.
* Protect our Planet— Roddick’s business endorses the use of renewable resources and sustainable raw ingredients, supporting sustainable wood through the use of Forest Stewardship Council certified wood products. In addition, The Body Shop works to reduce waste and the unnecessary use of excess packaging in their products. In addition, Roddick has renewable energy used and for every carbon they produce, The Body Shop plants trees to absorb the carbon that they have created.
Since the company was founded in 1976, Dame Anita Roddick has vowed to never test their products on animals. In 1990, The Body Shop took their stand against animal testing once step further by adopting a company policy to refuse to purchase any ingredient that has been tested or re-tested on an animal. By 1996, the company became the first retail establishment to sign the Corporate Standard of Compassion to Animals and continues to be a leader in cruelty-free products. Recently, The Body Shop won the "Proggy" award for best cruelty free cosmetics, given by PETA Europe.
Our business runs on passion, and our five values; Protect the Planet, Support Community Trade, Against Animal Testing, Defend Human Rights, Activate Self Esteem, govern all that we do, from reducing our carbon footprint to ordering our envelopes. To us, there is no other way to work. After all, when you believe in what you do, you do it better.
We were the first international cosmetics brand to be awarded the Humane Cosmetics Standard for our Against Animal Testing policy. And we have our own fair trade programme called Community Trade, making us the only cosmetics company with such an extensive commitment to trading fairly. Community Trade now works with 31 suppliers in 24 countries, providing over 15,000 people across the globe with essential income to build their futures
